About Princetown
ABOUT PRINCETOWN
by Trevor James.
Think of Princetown and you think of Dartmoor and its prison. Set amid some of the most spectacular scenery on the moor it is not typical of the traditional moorland town. Had its founder,  Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt, enjoyed greater success with his farming activities such might have been the case. When his ambitious plans began to falter because of the cold and the wet and the poor soil, it was Dartmoor Prison he actively promoted. It opened in 1809 as a prisoner of war depot for the French who were captured during the war against Napoleon and later there were Americans as well, taken in the war of 1812.
